NEW! Tree Legacy Program
The Tree Legacy Program provides a way for you to invest in the future of Monroe by planting trees. Trees specifically designated (species) can be purchased at area nurseries and the City of Monroe will plant your donated tree. Donated trees will be planted on public lands in our community. Individual tree memorials can be facilitated. Details are kept in a beautiful book, noting the purchaser of the tree, date of planting, its type and location and its designee and are available for viewing in the Office of Beautification Coordinator. All the people involved are notified when the tree has been planted. We will plant trees that are suitable for our region and the specific location.

Adopt A Spot
Statement of Purpose - The Adopt-A-Program is a beautification and litter control program facilitated by Keep Monroe Beautiful. This program enables citizens to demonstrate their community pride by taking part in removing litter from a park, road, or street.
Citizens are making their neighborhoods cleaner and safer by adopting areas and keeping them litter free. These volunteers not only provide a community service, they also help relieve the City of some of the financial burden of maintaining Monroe's parks and roads.
Adopt-a-Spot Program Information
Who Can Adopt?
Anyone can adopt! Individuals, neighborhood groups, church groups, civic and social organizations can adopt a road, street, or park in Monroe.
Community Recognition for Adopting Organizations
In exchange for providing upkeep and maintaining litter control for a park, road, or street, the adopting organization will receive recognition through a community awareness sign. The sign will display your organization's name at the adopted site for the entire length of the adoption period.
Watersweep
The annual fall volunteer cleanup is conducted along Bayou Desiard and the Ouachita River. This event highlights that litter is not only unsightly but also a health risk to wildlife and fish.
This year's Water Sweep is scheduled Saturday, September 15, 2007 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. All participants will meet at the Forsythe Park. For more information, please call Jacqueline Benjamin, Beautification Coordinator at 329-4983.

If there is an area in our City that is an eyesore or that you feel flowers or shrubbery would enhance the area, I want to hear from you. Our City is where we all live, work, and play and it is everyone’s responsibility to make a difference. Let’s all do our part!
Waste in Place Curriculum
WASTE IN PLACE, Keep America Beautiful curriculum developed for K-6, addresses the problem of waste and its disposal alternatives and emphasizes responsible solid waste handling practices through hands-on activities targeting educators and students. The goal of WASTE IN PLACE is to instill proper waste handling practices in young people. This unique curriculum provides activities designed to develop awareness and knowledge of solid waste problems, which should result in informed decisions by our future community leaders.
The curriculum was developed from three years of research and uses a behaviorally based, systematic approach to changing attitudes and practices related to proper waste handling. It is consistent with recommendations from the National Board of Education, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Science Foundation, Science for All Americans, and Project 2061 which include: utility, social responsibility, intrinsic value of knowledge, philosophical value and childhood enrichment.
Green Station
Located at Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, the tree container nursery is the first phase of a nursery plan. A container nursery will allow the Keep Monroe Beautiful, Public Works Department Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, Parks and Recreation Department, and volunteer organizations to work cooperatively to successfully grow and plant an increased number of strong and healthy trees on public lands throughout the city. Future goals are to expand the Green Station to include composting using zoo manure and install a green house to allow propagation of plants.
Recycle
The Monroe Freecycle(TM) Network is open to all who want to "recycle" that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door, feel free to post it. Or maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself! Nonprofit groups are also welcome to participate! Please start your listing with the words OFFER or Wanted.
One constraint: everything posted must be free. This network is brought to you by The Freecycle Network, a nonprofit organization and a movement of people interested in keeping good stuff out of landfills. Check out freecycle.org for other cities and info on the movement! E-mail freecyclemonroe-owner@yahoogroups.com for questions or improvement ideas!
