Ribbon Cutting for “Stampede” Mural at Monroe’s Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo

Thursday, August 16, 2018 - 8:30am

WHAT: Mayor Jamie Mayo and the Monroe City Council are pleased to join Community Affairs Director Robert Johnson, Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo Director Joseph Clawson, and Masur Museum of Art Director Evelyn Stewart to announce and invite the media and public to a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially commemorate the new mural inside the Monroe Civic Center Arena. The event will be held 10:30 am Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, located at 1405 Bernstein Park Road.

ARTIST: Raluca Iancu American, b. 1989

MURAL NAME AND DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY (Courtesy of the Artists): This mural was partially inspired by a Romanian expression, “you're seeing green horses on the walls," which alludes to the idea of unobtainable desire. This can be interpreted as either positive (ambition) or negative (foolishness). The idea of this potentially idealistic dream state is paired with stampeding horses. In popular culture, horses are romanticized. The sound of thundering hooves, galloping, is thrilling! A stampede becomes a majestic display of magnificent, powerful, creatures. The truth of the stampede, however, is that of an uncontrolled reaction. It is a sudden, panicked, rush of beasts running in response to a real, or perceived, threat. 2

We would like to thank the Monroe – West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau for their grant funding to support this project.

A similar ceremony was held August 10, at the Monroe Civic Center to commemorate the “Songs from the Silver Waters” mural by artists Drek Davis and Vitus Shell.

AN UPCOMING CEREMONY WILL SOON BE HELD FOR A MURAL RECENTLY INSTALLED AT

THE MONROE REGIONAL AIRPORT
