Monroe Transit Wins National Award
On March 10, 2008, the Monroe Transit System will be among ten transit systems nationwide to be honored in Washington, D.C. at the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) 2008 Success in Enhancing Ridership Annual Awards Banquet. The Monroe Transit System received this award because of outstanding growth in ridership. From 2006 to 2007, our ridership grew from 1,137,731 passenger trips to 1,201,175, a 6% increase. From 2002 to 2007, passenger trips have increased from 685,000, an 75% increase.
Mayor Jamie Mayo comments, "We are all Monroe Proud of our Transit System for this great achievement. By extending services hours and improving our routes, Monroe Transit offers a safe and cheaper alternative with local gas prices at an all-time high. As a result, in 2007, Monroe Transit had over 1.2 million passenger trips, an all-time high."
2008 marks the second year that the FTA has offered this award, which identifies best practices in the transit industry for increasing ridership. The winners of the award will be used as models for transit systems throughout the country. The award was open to transit systems of all sizes throughout the U.S., totaling over 800 eligible. Within the small urban category, those systems serving areas of populations between 50,000 and 200,000, Monroe Transit was among only three selected.
"This award is something to really be proud of, because although we have won awards in the past for the amount of our growth, this award says that we are not only doing the right things to grow ridership, but that we are among the best in the country at doing it", said Joseph Comerford, General Manager of the Monroe Transit System.
Monroe Transit Donation Drive Results
The city of Monroe and the Monroe Transit System are proud to announce the results of their donation drive efforts. Throughout the month of October, the Monroe Transit System ran promotions to raise donations for Twin City Community Welfare, a 73 year old non-profit agency providing assistance to those in need within the twelve parish Northeast Louisiana area.
In an effort to involve the entire community, Monroe Transit held its first ever "Stuff the Bus" campaign. Each Saturday for six weeks, a bus was parked at all Monroe and West Monroe Brookshire's locations, as well as Wal-Mart and Super 1 in Monroe. In total, area residents stuffed the bus with 459 cans of food, 63 bags of clothing, and $516.
Along with "Stuff the Bus", Monroe Transit also offered a free ride with a canned food item on October 26th and encouraged employees to donate food items with the offer of dress down weekends throughout October. These two efforts together raised an additional 682 cans of food.
New Trolley Name and Logo Announced
After over 100 entries to the "Name the Trolley" contest, Monroe Transit unveiled the winning name along with the new trolley logo. Monroe resident Charles Phelan was the contest winner with the name "Downtown Trolley Line". The name was chosen because it readily identified the purpose of the trolley and the areas served.
