Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo and the Monroe City Council are pleased to announce the 12th Annual Water Sweep 9 am until 1 pm Saturday, September 10th. Volunteers are being sought to take part in this effort to clean up area waterways.

Cleanup sites will be established throughout the community with cleanup supplies, and bottled water available for volunteers. Those sites will be set up in the following locations:

  • Forsythe Boat Dock
  • Black Bayou Lake NWR
  • Lazarre Point
  • Bawcomville Recreation Area
  • Cheniere Lake Areas #4 & #5
  • Sterlington Recreation Area

Volunteers are needed both on foot and on boat.  During previous Water Sweep events, items that were removed from area waterways included tires, furniture and a variety of household items and trash. Volunteers are encouraged to register early. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who pre-register through www.ouachitagreen.org. Participants may also sign up during the morning of the event at any staging area in Ouachita Parish.

Water Sweep activities are coordinated by Ouachita Green, which is a nonprofit organization made up of three local affiliates of Keep Louisiana Beautiful - Keep Monroe, Keep Ouachita Parish and Keep West Monroe Beautiful. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tensas Basin Levee District Board also help implement this annual event.
